Pulse hand-built utilises several internal conductors.

Pulse MicroLine
Pulse MicroLine conductor is Teflon coated with bespoke high purity copper strands plated in silver to a pre-defined thickness. New manufacturing methods were incorporated to handle the fragility of this critical conductor. The MicroLine strands, being a fraction of a human hair in thickness, create a challenge in the construction of the hand-built Pulse, limiting the overall length to a maximum of 2.0m. This conductor is only implemented in the hand-built Pulse cables.

Pulse HairLine
Pulse HairLine conductor is similar to the MicroLine, Teflon coated with over 3 times the number of bespoke high purity copper strands, plated in silver to half the thickness. The HairLine strands, also thinner than human hair, are designed with a ‘slow’ twist requiring special manufacturing techniques that ensure absolute quality and consistency.

Pulse ModeLine
Pulse ModeLine conductor, Teflon coated with several bespoke high purity copper strands is plated in silver to twice the thickness of the MicroLine. The ModeLine strands, with a ‘fast’ twist, are designed to assist wideband audio signal transmission through three main conduction layers. As per MicroLine and HairLine, there are both ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ conductors of ModeLine to ensure absolute signal quality.

Pulse EarthLine
Pulse EarthLine conductor, Teflon coated with multi stranded high purity copper strands, is plated in silver to 2/3 of the thickness of the MicroLine. The EarthLine defines an exact DC reference for all the alternating signals and in conjunction with the MicroLine, HairLine and ModeLine conductors provides maximum low level detail with remarkable dynamic range. Each and every hand-built Pulse cable is fully shielded with the necessary number and combination of internal conductors to a pre-specified twist and terminated with Vertere proprietary reference RCA or balanced XLR connectors.

Line Level Analogue Interconnect
The Line Level Pulse-R, conceived with the constant line-level signal in mind, is internally configured differently from the tonearm cable. It is designed to conduct complex, alternating, wideband and dynamic audio signals with absolute integrity. Following in the footsteps of our hand-built Pulse, Pulse-R provides unrestricted signal dynamics while preserving the intricate low level detail.

Pre Out Analogue Interconnect
Pre Out Pulse-R internal conductors are also configured differently from the Pulse-R Line Level in order to work effortlessly with and cater for the altering preamplifier output signal. Preamp output is volume controlled, where the signal level is amplified or attenuated as desired, which in turn causes the noise floor to change with it.

Tonearm Cable
Pulse-R external Tonearm Cable, similar in design to our hand-built Pulse, also enables the miniature cartridge generator to drive the phono input with ease. Pulse-R cable construction facilitates conducting the delicate phono signal as well as accommodating the substantial RIAA equalisation on the LP.

Internal Conductors
Pulse-X Loudspeaker Cable has a unique internal design and construction.
It utilises a DC zero conductor providing ground reference for the fully shielded and multi-conductor audio signal.
The signal shield is connected at the amplifier output to the DC zero ground for optimised performance.
This arrangement is also applied to bi-wired applications even when using a single connector at the amplifier end.

Audrilabs Novachord is an integrated amplifier based on a hybrid preamp running in class A. This preamp drives an analog class D power stage. The classic 6H30Pi Russian twin triode is the tube of choice because it works with very low resistor values in the signal path.

This design is free of global negative feedback and there’s only very little local negative feedback. There are two mono preamplifiers and two power amplifiers into one chassis.

Inside the Novachord there are four toroidal transformers. The power stage is fed by a huge 1.4KVA power toroid with a 88.000µF capacitor bank to generate 500 watts into 4Ω. Each preamplifier channel with its multi-layer circuit board has its own toroidal power transformer and separate power supply. The fourth transformer feeds the LCD, touch-screen management micro controller and tube heater supplies.

Volume attenuation is via a DACT 24-position stepper attenuator.

With its orange/black touch screen for input/bypass/setup selection and that lone multi-function master control, the Novachord presents an exceptionally tidy and modern face to the world.

Novachord has 3+1 RCA+XLR inputs and one pair of top-quality Furutech speaker terminals.

Power specs are 220/500w into 8/4Ω. Peak output current is 46A. Frequency response is 4Hz to 60kHz ±3dB. Damping factor is 1.500 @ 1kHz. Dimensions are 480 x 474 x 154 DxWxH.

Hand-made thermo-treated precious metal conductors are blended in proprietary ratios. Air-insulated dielectrics with ultra-effective shielding and large vibration-isolating tubing are supplemented with external anti-resonant African hardwood blocks.

Terminations are via custom-made 24K gold-plated spades with African hardwood barrels and hand-soldered joints. Each signal phase runs separate cable legs and resonance blocks.

FM Acoustics Resolution 233 Harmonic Linearizer

The FM 233 Harmonic Linearizer allow precise correction and linearization of non-optimal recordings. They do this in an absolutely unique way. For the first time bad resonances, colouration, noise, obnoxious sound and other limitations are improved without affecting the balance of the audio signal. While the characteristics and transparency of the original signal is kept pristine, attenuated parts of the music spectrum can be strengthened.

The method of operation is rather intriguing as the entire audio signal takes a direct path from input to output. The improvement is achieved by a unique additive/subtractive Linearizer bank that corrects aberrations. Using just five controls, any frequency (or group of frequencies) in the entire audio band can be optimized without negative influence inflicted on the original audio signal. Furthermore, the signal always remains purely in the analogue domain.

When looking at the front panel one could be reminded of an equalizer. However, the Harmonic Linearizer's mode of operation is different and avoids all limitations. The FM 233 are not used like an equalizer as every control is dynamically interacting with the others in a unique linear multi-parameter process. There is no ripple in the pass band and no phase shift/discontinuity, both of which are unsolved problems of equalizers.

Massive improvements in the reproduction quality of CD, DVD, Tape, LP and any other source are now reality. The improvements are described anywhere from "truly amazing" to "incredible".
While some near perfect recordings will not need much linearization, good recordings will become great, mediocre recordings will become rather nice and some downright unlistenable recordings will become listenable. The improvements are rather intriguing and must be experienced to be fully realized.

The Struss R500 amplifier does not possess its own features. Instead, it reinforces exactly what it is given and gives out everything that the speakers can cope with. The technical solutions used are owned by the company and are registered with the numerous patents. The amplified channel constitutes a fully balanced system supplied with two electrolytic compensators with a total capacity of 176 000 uF and two toroidal transformers with a capacity of 2.0 kW (2.8 kW peak), each  magnetically and electrostatically shielded. It is the tradition of this company not no include any bipolar transistor in the entire amplified system.

Zanden Audio Model 6000 Integrated Amplifier

Zanden Audio introduced its first integrated power amplifier, the Model 6000. It includes a full-function remote control for volume, source selection, muting and absolute polarity inversion. These functions are accessible also via a rotary knob and switches on the unit itself.

The preamplifier section offers 3 inputs plus unity gain in a home theater or as a power amplifier with separate preamplifier. The model 6000 utilizes 4 x KT-120 in push/pull to achieve 100 watts per channel. The 1st and 2nd voltage gain stages use 4 x 12AU7A, one per stage per channel. Zanden eschews paralleling output tubes and direct-couples the 2nd and 3rd stages of the output circuit, which operates fully balanced.

A number of unique noise absorption and shielding techniques are used throughout including Asahi-Kasei Fibers Corporation’s Pulshut RF noise absorption material.

Chord Red Reference Mk III CD Player

The latest update to our full sized CD player range now takes the Red Reference to Mk III status. This update makes a major technological change to the disc loading mechanism to incorporate a geared motor drive. The door will now open or close seamlessly at the touch of a button. Additionally the latest USB technology has been added to provide a true asynchronous 192KHz input allowing use of the internal DAC to playback high resolution music stored on a computer.

Naim ND5 XS streaming player

The ND5 XS fits into the line-up below the NDX, selling for around £1925 when it hits the shops next month, and is designed to complement the other models in Naim's slimline XS series.

It's also the first Naim network player able to handle 192kHz/24-bit content natively, and the company is rolling out an upgrade program for existing Uniti products and the NDX, enabling 192/24 on those products, and bringing the promise of AirPlay capability early in 2012.

As well as having both wired and wireless networking for the streaming of content from the internet, including internet radio, or from local network sources such as NAS drives or computers, the ND5 XS also has three digital inputs for external sources, and a front panel USB socket for memory devices or direct digital connection of iPods or iPhones.

As well as its 24-bit/192kHz capability, the ND5 XS can handle music in a wide range of formats, including WAV, FLAC, AIFF, AAC, WMA, Ogg Vorbis and MP3 formats.

The ND5 XS uses digital buffering with fixed sampling rates for zero jitter, while the proprietary 16 times oversampling and digital filter uses SHARC 40-bit floating point digital signal processing. This feeds Burr Brown PCM1791A digital to analogue conversion, running at 768kHz.

There are seperate power supplies for the digital, analogue, DSP and clock sections of the player, with the large toroidal transformer having separate outputs for each section

Optical connection is used between the various sections of the player, seen left in a typical XS system here at the show, to ensure complete galvanic isolation.

Like the NDX, the new model can also be upgraded with the addition of the XPS or 555PS power supplies, or the Naim DAC, while a dedicated slimline power supply in a matching case, the XP5 XS is on the way next year.

Selling for around £1500, this is will be an entry-level version of the XPS.

And also in common with the NDX, the new model can be fitted with an optional radio tuner module, giving FM/DAB reception.

The ND5 XS can be controlled using the front-panel controls or the remote handset supplied, or using the free n-Stream app on iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.
